Solar Powered LED Flower Sculpture Lights up the Night
Aug 31st
Looking to add some solar-powered flare to your boring backyard? This gigantic energy-generating flower sculpture by id&@le concepts may be just the ticket. Dubbed the Gul Two, the brightly-hued blossom is outfitted with an array of six 10 x 5 cm solar panels that soak up sunlight throughout the day and store it in a hidden 4-watt battery. Once night falls, the kinetic sculpture erupts in a brilliant LED display that lights up the night with shades of sapphire, emerald, ruby, violet, indigo, and opal.

2 Million Smart Meters and Counting
Aug 31st
Secretary Steven Chu visited Battelle headquarters in Columbus, Ohio, today to make a big announcement about our nation’s electrical grid: an impressive two million smart grid meters have been installed across the country – thanks to the Recovery Act.
The smart meter technology will help families and businesses cut their energy costs by creating a more reliable, modern electrical grid, reducing response time for energy disruptions and enabling consumers to better monitor their energy consumption. In Ohio alone, more than 180,000 smart meters have been installed so far, smart grid technologies that Secretary Chu says “will give consumers choice and promote energy savings, increase energy efficiency, and foster the growth of renewable energy resources.”
Help Make this Mobile Garden on a Subway Train a Reality
Aug 31st
When we first saw this amazing mobile subway garden, we were floored – but then we realized that it doesn’t exist yet. That’s right, the green art project for Chicago is still being worked on, and there is a chance that without additional funding it might not become a reality. The basic gist of the installation is a native plant garden that would live right on top of the rolling stock of a CTA train. If you want to see the mobile garden come to fruition, visit this link and let them know!

Barn Loft Tables Blend Modern Design With Agricultural History
Aug 31st
Here at Inhabitat we love projects that combine modern design with rustic details. So when we spotted these Barn Loft Tables by The Steel Fork, we couldn’t help but be enamored by their simple yet refined aesthetic. Each table has been individually built to order with a folded recycled steel base and topped off with wood beam that was rescued from a demolished barn in Pennsylvania. Each piece of material has been cut to create several interesting angles, and a clear coating has been applied to give each piece a shiny finish. Whether placed to the side or set in center, these tables make a great addition to anyinterior space.

The "God Particle": Have Your Cake and Eat It Too!
Aug 31st
Next time you’re at a birthday party and you’re sinking your teeth into the first bite of cake, consider this: What do you know is in that cake? Eggs? Yeast? Maybe sugar? You “know” these things because they are common ingredients in many baked goods. You don’t necessarily see the eggs. You probably can’t even directly taste them. But you know they’re there, right? Or you can at least make a very educated guess that somewhere along the line – this cake had to be made with the ingredient of eggs.
Kick it up a few notches into the world of advanced physics, where scientists work under many similar assumptions. In particle physics for example, physicists work with a mathematical recipe known as the Standard Model. They “know” its ingredients – even though one of those ingredients has never actually been seen.

New Stick-on Solar Panels Make Installations a Snap
Aug 31st
Today Global Solar unveiled a new type of flexible solar module that builders can stick directly on the roof, rather than constructing racks to hold heavy glass-covered cells. The modules won’t cost less than traditional arrays, at least initially, but they make it easier to include solar power at the time of construction and, without the racks, can cover a greater portion of the roof and provide more power.

Precast Concrete Bases Improve Wind Turbine Efficiency
Aug 31st
Photo © Flickr DraconianRain
A recently-released report announced that the use of precast concrete bases can actually make wind turbines sturdier, more efficient, and less resource-intensive to produce. According to the Atlas CTB White Paper, the wider footprint of precast concrete bases adds stability to the foundation of wind turbines and can reduce the amount of concrete needed to install them by 60-70%. The precast bases also make it easier to raise taller turbines into more powerful winds, and their rapid construction time means that more turbines can be built.

Prefabricated Bank Campus Cashes in on Sustainability
Aug 31st
Russia’s leading bank has just unveiled plans to construct a green-roofed corporate university designed by Dutch Architect Erick van Egeraat. Located in a rural setting west of Moscow, the Sberbank University will provide education and training for the bank’s 20,000 employees. To achieve a short construction time, the campus buildings will largely be prefabricated, and the plan focuses upon sustainability as a cornerstone of its design.

U.S. Coast Guard to Install New Wind Turbine at Base in Maine
Aug 31st
Following in the footsteps of the U.S. military’s embracing of renewable energy, such as fighter jets running on biofuel and hydrogen fuel cell powered tanks, the U.S. coast guard has decided to use wind power by installing a turbine at their Southwest Harbor Base in Maine. The turbine is part of a more amibitious program to achieve a zero carbon footprint as the station. Some of the other plans include installing solar panels and solar hot water heaters along with new electrical systems and improved insulation in order to reduce emissions and cut costs.

Boxy Wooden Treehouse Tower Now Open in Netherlands!
Aug 31st
We’ve seen plenty of tree houses in our day, but never one as boxy and modern as this new wooden observation tower which recently opened in the Netherlands. Okay so technically the structure, which consists of six boxes (that almost look like shipping containers) stacked atop one another, isn’t a true tree house. But its natural cladding, made out of half logs from the area surrounding it, definitely help it blend in with its arboreal neighbors. And now that the boxy building by Ateliereen Architecten is finally open, people can scale its facade rock-climbing style, check out the views or even (for the more adventurous) try out its rope slide and high rope track.

Luxury LEED Vineyard Resort in Oregon
Aug 31st
Planted in the middle of a working vineyard in Newberg, a small town in the Willamette Valley, The Allison Inn and Spa is doing some amazing things in terms of reducing the ecological footprint associated with typically high-impact hospitality operations. The resort was designed by GGLO to save 48% on utility costs, as well as reduce potable water use by 78% and overall water use by 37%, compared to a comparable non-green project.
The Allison was completed in September last year and has been certified to the LEED Gold level. The project includes 85 guest rooms, conference space, a spa, and a restaurant that sources a portion of its herbs, fruits, and vegetables on-site.
In addition to a 10,000 square green roof (pictured below), which helps control stormwater runoff and minimize the need for energy, The Allison is powered in part by a 55 kW photovoltaic array. Also, 3,800 square feet of solar hot water is collected on the roof for use in the kitchen, laundry, guest rooms, and spa.
All together, The Allison received everything but two points in the energy category of LEED certification. Other elements that contribute toward energy conservation include double-pane windows, variable refrigerant volume heating and cooling, and energy-efficient lighting and controls.
About nine acres of the total project has a unique eco-turf that requires no fertilizer and little water, while providing a natural habitat. There’s also a purple pipe that will be connected to the city’s reclaimed water line in the future to completely eliminate the use of potable water at The Allison.
The resort features 325 pieces of art from local artists. Furthermore, 24% of materials are regionally sourced and manufactured, 28% of materials contain recycled content, and just over half of wood products are FSC certified.

Tonecoon Lounger Offers Curvaceous Eco Seating
Aug 30th
Looking for a lounger that is every bit as stylish as it is sustainable? Well the Tonecoon by PIE checks off both boxes with its beautiful hand-woven water hyacinth and rattan frame. Water hyacinth is a highly-renewable natural fiber that grows so quickly in parts of Asia that it is often considered a nuisance, so the fact that it’s being used to create a durable and modern piece of furniture is pretty amazing. Plus, the Tonecoon is so versatile that it can be used as either an indoor piece or as outdoor seating.

A Living Brick that Supports Building Structure and Plant Life
Aug 30th
Two students experimented with a mixture of soil and cement to successfully create a brick that would be strong enough to keep its form, but also be porous enough to support plant life. Their idea, dubbed the ‘Earth Bank Living Wall System’, was recently installed on a shipping container at the Eugene Federal Courthouse Garden. The 3-inch thick wall was pre-planted with sedums, with the goal of seeing whether or not the seeds would be able to germinate on the vertical concrete/soil environment. To date sedums and succulents are thriving and courthouse visitors and employees pleased to have this new bit of beautiful greenery.

Colorful Retro Lights Made from Recycled Cans
Aug 30th
Andy Warhol may have brought Campbell’s Soup to iconic pop art status, but there’s one designer bent on redefining this can with a more practical use. Designed by Willem Heeffer for FUSE, an interiors and vintage furniture company, the ‘Can Light’ is a cool new lighting solution that re-purposes old cans of Campbell’s Tomato soup and Heinz Beanz into funky new pendant lamps. By breathing new life into unwanted trash, Heeffer has created a popping retro piece that gives a colorful nod to both Mother Earth and Americana.

Ultra-Efficient Avion to Go From Canada to Mexico on 14 Gallons
Aug 30th
Fuel efficiency may have only become a hot topic recently, but some people have been thinking about with hypermiling vehicles for decades. Take, for example, inventors Bill Green and Craig Henderson — in 1984 the pair built a car dubbed the “Avion“, which squeezed out 113 mpg in test runs. Now it’s going back on the road in an attempt to travel from Canada to Mexico on just 14 gallons of gas.
