Time Flies With the Recycled Aluminum Epigram Clock

time flies clock, sustainable clock, aluminum clock, green clock, social responsibility, charity, International Rescue Committee, epigram clock, botanist, green products

Times flies when you’re helping out humanitarian efforts. Okay maybe that’s not quite how the saying goes, but this Epigram Clock by Botanist gives us a little poetic license. Designed by celebrated graphic designer Milton Glaser, the clock is made of aluminum which contains up to 70% recycled content, and a percentage of the proceeds goes directly to the International Rescue Committee, an organization that responds to the world’s worst humanitarian crises and helps people to survive and rebuild their lives.

Hurricane Earl – Where Is It Headed and What Does It Have to Do With Energy?

Hurricane Earl has the East Coast of the United States in his sights. Earl is moving northward from the Bahamas, and is expected to skirt the U.S. Atlantic coast from Cape Hatteras to New England, before making landfall in Nova Scotia over the Labor Day weekend. But hurricane paths are uncertain, so we’ll have to wait and see where Earl actually ends up.

Eco Shore Homes for Long Beach Island

Akamai-squallco-front

Recently I had the opportunity to talk with Kevin Romano of SquallCo Development about his new website and modern green homes offered on Long Beach Island. The development company has two home plans, the smaller called Akamai and the other called Ohana, which have been designed in a joint venture with Steve Midouhas. With these, SquallCo hopes to make warm, modern, sustainable homes more approachable to folks in the area.

Akamai-squallco-interior

Akamai, pictured in the first three renderings, is a 1,250 square foot home with three bedrooms and two bathrooms. At roughly half the size of typical new construction, Akamai uses natural lighting and indoor/outdoor spaces to provide a larger experience.

Ohana, pictured in the bottom two renderings, is a 2,250 square foot home with multiple living areas, two bedroom suites, and abundant outdoor space. This design works well in the multi-generational context by offering some privacy to each side.

SquallCo uses a hybrid model of on and off-site fabrication and expects to be able to build these homes in less than four to five months. With all design fees, permits, construction, landscaping, and finishes considered, cost of construction should be about $250 per square foot.

In terms of environmental strategies, SquallCo prioritizes reduction of energy use, reduction/elimination of toxins, reduction of water waste, and facilitation of 100% water permeability. Through design and construction, the idea is to reduce the environmental impact of each home from the beginning.

Water Works: The Bay Area’s Summer Art and Water Festival

Betsy Damon, Christina Bertea, Lauren Elder, Mary White, Nik Bertulis, Water Works, san francisco, bay area

While some states are already starting to get cozy for cooler fall days, the folks up in Northern California will still be sitting pretty during September, which happens to be the Bay Area’s summer month! With warm and sunny days filling out their calendar, it’s only fitting that the community driven event, Water Works, has been scheduled to happen over September’s weekends. Starting this Saturday, local artist and designers will gather in an Oakland backyard to discuss water issues and show off some of their very own creations, including, as seen above, the Raintree by artist Christina Bertea, a rainwater collection tree that doubles as a clothesline in the summer. Read ahead to learn more about this fantastic event and to gander at a few more glorious projects!

The Champagne Bottle Slims Down to Cut its Carbon Footprint

champagne, greener bottle, carbom emissions, eco design, green design

Champagne bottles contain three times the air pressure of a typical car tire, which is why the iconic green bottles weigh 900 grams (two pounds). Not for long though – makers of Champagne bottles in France have been working on slimming down the bottle in an effort to reduce its weight, thereby reducing carbon emissions from transportation. A New York Times article reports that after much research and testing, manufacturers have streamlined the bottle through its shoulders, shaving off 65 grams (2.3 oz). Many Champagne producers have already switched over or are planning to do so.

‘Dark Silicon’ Could Boost Smartphone Battery Life 11 X

dark silicon smartphone, university california san diego greendroid, greendroid dark silicon, smartphone battery greendroid, greendroid battery life, smartphone dark silicon

It may sound like a mineral used in an evil scientist’s death ray, but ‘dark silicon’ actually refers to underused transistors found in modern microprocessors — and scientists believe that this resource can be tapped to improve the batteries of everyday smartphones. A team of researchers at the University of California San Diego have developed a new prototype chip called the GreenDroid that harnesses dark silicon to improve energy efficiency by up to 11 times compared to standard mobile application processors.

Energy Empowers: the Nation's Clean Energy Stories

As Assistant Secretary of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy, part of my mission has been to spur long-term growth in clean energy and energy savings solutions. One important initiative has been to inform the public about clean energy success stories throughout the country, such as the battery manufacturer that plans to hire 80 workers in Menomonee Falls, Wisc., or the more than 10,000 low-income households in Ohio who now save money on their electricity bills.

A new water filter that employs cotton dipped in nano-sized silver wires and copper tubes works 80,000 times faster than filters that simply block bacteria from getting through. The filter, developed by Stanford University researchers for use in developing countries, efficiently conducts a tiny charge of electricity, zapping 98 percent of all bacteria.

New Fabric-Dyeing Technique Uses Fluid-State CO2, Not Water

Refinity, DyeCoo, carbon dioxide, water, eco-friendly dyes, eco-fashion, sustainable fashion, green fashion, sustainable stylePhoto © Amber Isabel

The vagaries of the fashion and textile industry haven’t been kind to our waterways. In fact, textile coloring and treatment accounts for 17 to 20 percent of global industrial pollution, according to The World Bank. The solution? Remove water from the dyeing equation. DyeCoo Textile Systems is a Dutch company that is doing just that with the first commercial dyeing machine to replace water with supercritical carbon dioxide — a pressurized form of the gas with unusual liquid-like properties.

Off-the-Shelf Dyes Increase Solar Panel Absorption

solar panel absorption, solar panel efficiency, how efficient are solar panels, how efficient are thin cell solar panels, increase solar efficiency, how to increase solar panel efficiency, how to make solar panels, solar panel innovation, solar energy innovation

The hippies were the first to push solar energy en masse in the 70’s, so it’s a wonder we haven’t thought of this before — it turns out the same stuff used to tie-dye t-shirts can increase the efficiency of solar panels. A new paper released in the Journal of Renewable and Sustainable Energy details the discovery that many common off-the-shelf dyes — as well as dyes used in the medical and food industry — can make solar panels more effective when mixed properly. The researchers basically use the dye to change the color spectrum that the panel can absorb, thereby increasing its efficiency by as much as 8%.

PISSKY: Gilpin Whisky is Recycled from Diabetic’s Urine

gilpin family whisky, james gilpin, diabetic urine, eco friendly whisky, sustainable whisky, organic whisky, environmentally friendly whisky, recycled whisky, food and beverage, unique organic foods

James Gilpin has Type 1 Diabetes — his pancreas doesn’t work, forcing him to take shots of insulin to process glucose from food. Gilpin got to thinking about elderly patients with diabetes, like his grandmother, who secrete tons of unprocessed medicine and sugar in their urine. A great idea dawned upon him — well, perhaps it’s a gross idea but we’ll leave that up to you — and he started the Gilpin Family Whisky project, a high end line of single malt whiskey made from the sugar-laden urine of people with diabetes. His grandmother was the first patient to recycle her pee into whiskey!

Each day, two out of ten people who enter the United States go through the San Ysidro border, and if you’ve ever been through there, you know how long it takes. Now, the most important point of entry into the US will finally be renovated with optimized lane efficiency to process more cars even quicker — plus the entire project will be net zero. Seattle architecture firm The Miller Hull Partnership is responsible for the new design, which will feature solar energy, rainwater catchment, and target LEED Platinum certification.

Clean Energy Experts Unveils MultifamilyG.com – A Green Website for Multifamily Buildings

LOS ANGELES, CA. (September 1, 2010) Clean Energy Experts is pleased to announce that it has launched its latest green website, MultifamilyG.com, dedicated to educating multifamily property managers, owners and investors about practical green technologies that can reduce operating costs and increase the community’s allure to residents. Whether multifamily decision makers are considering the construction of a new building or trying to retrofit an old complex, MultifamilyG.com provides the tools and information needed to reduce energy costs and green multifamily properties.

At MultifamilyG.com, users can use the free online green self-check to determine how green their multifamily community is, learn about green solutions and energy reduction techniques and request free advice from professional energy experts.  MultifamilyG.com was developed in collaboration with Tami Siewurk, an acclaimed property management author and executive and the founder of Multifamilypro and the Annual Multifamily Housing Brainstorming Sessions.

According to Dr. Beau Peelle, co-founder of Clean Energy Experts, owners and managers of large multifamily communities are facing undesirable expenses and utility bills yet it is harder and harder to attract more residents in this market to provide the necessary revenues.

“Today’s property managers are under pressure to save on operating costs and attract more residents.  One avenue to improve profitability and at the same time update the health of their community is to consider energy saving and green technologies and practices.  There are practical, cost-effective and proven green and renewable solutions – from solar power energy to efficient lighting – available today that can be implemented at low cost or conveniently financed. The beauty is that every community’s management can do something today to save money, go green and attract more residents.”

Tami Siewurk agrees and adds that more tools and resources are needed to guide multifamily decision makers as they try to incorporate more energy efficient solutions into their buildings.  “Our industry will benefit from clear and actionable solutions.  MultifamilyG is a much needed resource to help educate property managers on the latest ‘go green’ opportunities.”

About Clean Energy Experts

The mission of Clean Energy Experts is to accelerate the adoption of cost-effective environmentally beneficial energy solutions. They educate consumers on the facts about renewable energy and energy efficiency through a portfolio of free educational websites and online tools including MyEnergySolution.com, the premier free website to help homeowners lower their utility bills, and HomeRebates.org, a complete source for the latest rebates, incentives and financing options for renewable and energy efficiency solutions such as solar power.  For more information, please visit www.cleanenergyexperts.com.

Next Gen Prefab Called v100 Mod Box

V100-mod-box

If Apple were to sell a homes, perhaps they would look something like this.  The v100 Mod Box is a 10′ x 10′ x 10′ cube made with green materials, state of the art appliances, and stylish fixtures.  It’s a new kind of structure that can be assembled by anyone — no tools required — and lives comfortably despite the fact that its footprint is so tiny.

V100-mod-box-living

Shown is a pair of Mod Boxes.  One box has the kitchen and living room, while the other has the bedroom and bathroom.  Amenities include walnut cabinets, an induction cooktop, a Fagor refrigerator, and Duravit sinks and shower and toilet.

The company that makes the v100 Mod Box was co-founded by Vincenz Saccento, an industry veteran behind the V2 Flat.  Saccento told me in a telephone conversation that v100 Mod Box will cost about the same as “stick and stucco” construction but the real value is in ultra fast and easy assembly.

Mod Box can be used for larger applications, such as for hotels and multifamily projects.  Saccento is working on a few such projects and will share more detail in the coming months.

In the mean time, keep in mind that this tiny prefab requires no nails, no screws, and no paint.  It’s low-maintenance and can be sent anywhere in the world.  If it is what it sounds like, it could be the next generation of prefab and completely revolutionary.
